Silver
Creek-Cedarvale Park
| Summer
1995 and 1998
CRAA built a vortex
weir test project, re-enforced eroding banks and planted numerous trees and shrubs
to shade the river and prevent erosion. The vortex weir created a small holding run
that is used by a number of juvenile steelhead and Atlantic salmon. The reforestation
work has taken hold and the willows are up to 15' tall. Water temperatures have cooled
slightly and the number of juvenile salmonids using the section has increased.

Levis Creek is a
small tributary that enters the Credit at the north end of Mississauga. There has
been some salmonid reproduction in the lower 1,000 m of the river, below a dam that
blocked migration. The dam was removed in the summer of 1997 which has allowed access
to another 7,000 m of Levis Creek. This summer we are conducting a temperature survey,
an electro-fishing survey and completing both river rehabilitation work and reforestation
work. A 1,500 m section with the lower middle sections of Levis Creek has been identified
by CRAA as the most important priority. The before picture below shows one of the
two properties that cover the area where we have permission from the land owner to
complete our rehabilitation work. The section will be forested with cedars, willows
and maple. Sections of the creek with severe erosion will also receive bio-engineering
work and stabilization work.

CRAA has approached
the land owner to reforest the banks of this section to shade the river and prevent
further erosion of the river banks. At this time the land owner has not agreed, but
we hope to receive the go-ahead by the fall of this year. This 800 m stretch of the
Credit River warms by as much as 12 F (6 C) from solar heating along the length of
this property. This is the highest priority site we identified in the area above Norval.

Upper Glen Williams
Summer, 1998
CRAA has received
permission from the land owner to reforest his property and complete some rock placement
to prevent the loss of the only large willow on the edge of the river. This property
is immediately below the 10th line property mentioned above. This section is not nearly
as unhealthy, but still warms the water a few degrees.
